Reminders from a supper club

A supper club is more than just a dining experience

I came along behind the scenes, tête-à-tête.dining’s spring supper club as another pair of helping hands with the set-up and capturing additional content after Alba had graciously reached out, remembering my interest in the supper clubs she’s hosted before through a mutual who introduced us, and what followed was an open invitation into the tete.a.tete.dining world.

I slipped in behind the scenes at tête-à-tête.dining’s spring supper club, this time as an extra pair of hands — helping with the set-up, camera in hand, ready to catch the in-between moments. Alba had reached out so thoughtfully, after a mutual friend had put in an introduction months ago, remembering how curious I’d been about the supper clubs she’d hosted before, and what followed was an open invitation into the tête-à-tête.dining’s world.

For this supper club, the magic began long before the first guest stepped through the door — in the company of a small circle of blooming creatives and seasoned professionals Alba had invited into her process, sharing a space so supportive of growth and exploration. Photographers, content creators, and producers, each bringing their own lens, quite literally and figuratively, moved through the stunning studio space, all drawn by the same instinct to create and pursue what excites us.

At the centre of it all was Alba. The way she hosts feels effortless, though it clearly is not. Her signature tête-à-tête style reveals itself in a focus on seasonality, simplicity, and a quiet elegance that becomes more apparent the longer you watch. Watching her vision come to life from the sidelines was unexpectedly emotional and unfamiliar in the best way. I’m used to being the one who executes the moodboard and directs the flow of a setup. This time, I got to step back, follow someone else’s lead, and just watch her bring it all to life with this steady, calm confidence.

From that outside point of view, what stayed with me most was watching someone like Alba do what she loves with such care, surrounded by friends and a support system who believed in her vision so strongly. It felt like the truest version of the saying about a night out: the process of getting ready with your best friends makes up half the excitement and is an essential part of what makes the evening itself.

There’s something deeply human about cooking for others; It’s a gesture that says: I see you, I’ve thought about you, I want you to feel taken care of. But for me, a supper club, at its best, isn’t just about the food and dining. It has always been about creating a space that feels safe enough for people to arrive as strangers and leave with a newfound sense of comfort in themselves. Where conversations stretch beyond small talk, unfolding slowly one course at a time, over a menu that feels like it was written just for the people sitting there that night.

I caught myself watching how people navigated the space: who slipped easily into conversation, who hovered at the edges, who already knew each other, who took a little longer to settle. It underscored something I’ve always felt but rarely said out loud: this experience isn't just about “community” as the word is often loosely used, but about designing an environment where people feel free enough to be themselves, even among strangers who, more often than not, feel the same underlying nervousness. What became clear was that no one ever really arrives as a blank slate. Everyone brings context with them, whether it is friendships, quiet heartaches, private hopes, or tiny hesitations. The real magic and success of a supper club is measured in how gently and naturally those stories are allowed to be told.

Somewhere along the way, I’d lost my own rhythm with hosting. Life got louder, and that part of me slipped into the background without me really noticing. Being in that room, seeing it all from a different angle, felt like a quiet nudge and a reminder of how much I’ve missed it, and how ready I might be to find my way back.
